Welcome to San Diego State University’s Center for Tobacco and the Environment. Our mission is to protect indoor and outdoor environments from persistent and toxic tobacco product pollutants. Explore to learn more!

The site launch is in the news!

We all deserve to live, work, and play in spaces that are free of toxic residue and waste from commercial tobacco products. Even years after tobacco use has ended, our streets, parks, beaches, waterways, and indoor environments remain contaminated with this tobacco legacy.

The Center for Tobacco and the Environment brings together communities and researchers from a wide range of backgrounds to seek solutions to human exposure and environmental contamination created by decades of tobacco use. We are committed to contributing to policy initiatives to end commercial tobacco sales and use by 2035.

Our Mission

The mission of the Center is to prevent, reduce, and eliminate tobacco’s toxic legacy of environmental pollution and harms to human health caused by decades of commercial tobacco sales and use. The Center aims to achieve this mission by engaging with both community members and an interdisciplinary research team.

Our Core Values:

  • Research and scholarship
  • Pluralism, openness, and integrity
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Innovation and sustainability
  • Environmental justice
  • Clean indoor and outdoor environments are basic human rights

Our Funding

The Center receives research grant support from California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program and the National Institutes of Health. Over the past five years alone, Center researchers have generated more than $6.5 million, published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, given many presentations as invited speakers at webinars and professional conferences, and supported numerous undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students through research training and culminating experiences.

Additional support varies by project. See our Current Projects page for more funding info on each project.
